Paper
Mountain
Size: 10” x 9” x
½”
Medium: White
Paper, White Gesso
Artist Statement: This
assignment required to take a 21”x24” piece of white paper, tear it up and assemble
the pieces together using gesso as an adhesive with no scraps wasted into a dimension
of approximately 8”x10”. While tearing the piece of paper, a few piece curled
up at the end while others had interesting texture on the edges. This inspired
me to create a landscape scene using the curly tip pieces of paper into leaves
for a tree and the piece of the rough edged texture ones for the mountain. Majority
of the scrap paper were used to create the thickness in the tree trunk in the
technique of paper mache and behind the triangular pieces that was used for creating
the mountains, the scrapes helped make shadows to show there was distances
between the mountains.

Bird
Size: 8” x 10” x 1
½”
Medium: White
Paper, White Gesso, Rembrandt Black pastel
Artist Statement: As
with the previous drawing assignment in to take a 21”x24” piece of paper and
convert it into an 8”x10” but instead of tearing the paper I used scissors for
clean cuts because I had an idea in mind. All the scrap pieces of paper from the
last drawing inspired me to create a nest for a bird. Anything and everything
can go into a bird’s nest right, but in this case all the scrape pieces at the
end were matted down and layered to create this nest. Also for this drawing
assignment, I was allowed to use some Rembrandt Black pastel to create value in
this piece. The pastel helped in distinguishing
some of the layers on the adult bird and created an interest backdrop.
