Ephemeral Marks in the Landscape

The Path I Once Walked
Size: Approx. 4’ x 12’
Medium: Stones, Sticks
Artist Statement: I pass by this small hidden pathway every time I go to the St. Augustine Parking Garage and loved how the geometric squares curve off into the unknown. I thought this would be a nice and settle area to do my first ephemeral landscape and I could use the stones and stick around me to create marks within the landscape. Stone paths like these are meant to be walk on, so the idea was to leave footprints behind to show someone has already be here and left their mark. I used my own feet to outline the footprint and then filled it in to make it much more bold, it wasn’t so bold and obvious footprint when it was just an outline. The sticks in between the large square stones were meant as a guide your eyes from one square to the next.

A Tree's Self Portrait

Size:  Approx.. 5’ x 13’
Medium: Leaves
Artist Statement: After walking around trying to find a big enough space to do this assignment, I came across this dirt parking lot that was practically empty (because the parking spaces required a special permit in order to park there).  When looking around for inspirations on what I should do, my eyes landed on a tree and the leaves falling from it. I thought it would be a fun idea to have a tree to create its own self-portrait using its own leaves to create the shape on the ground. A couple of the leaves had a little bit of a lighter color then the majority of the other leaves, I used that to create a little bit of value within the shape of the tree. A lot of manual work went into this, considering I didn’t have a rake with me and to only use my hands, but in the end I’m pretty happy on what I accomplished.

  1. I LOVE these. I especially love the title of "The Path I Once Walked"; so meaningful. And the tree...beautiful. I look forward to seeing what else you create.
